Rachel Stokoe
A monster lurks in the collective unconscious. Taking different forms for different people, impish creatures pop their heads out of our dreams and change our lives' landscapes.
Flipped on its head, these monsters are the heroes of our story, much like Nosferatu. They are notions, barely formed, but they can twist our environment into strange knots. We look in the shadows to see them more clearly, not to wish them away, but to understand them. Especially now, when the world has fallen pray to monsters outside ourselves, we are all engaged in the Herculean task of making sense of our surroundings, hoping somehow by understanding we can make better.
Trying to reflect the symbiosis of cultures rather than dichotomies, Rachel’s work captures the dialogue between the internal and external in identity formation.
The paintings can be read either as mark-making in service to image, or vice versa. Using abstract language to hint at imagery, the paintings become situational: meaning and directive change depending on the personal histories and the associations of the viewer.
